Homemade Vanilla Extract

Ok, so we’re back! I have missed y’all! For those of you who don’t know, I’m 21 weeks pregnant. I’m finally past the point where food doesn’t sound good and I have a little bit more time now to get back to my blog.

Each year my husband and I like to do some sort of homemade gift for Christmas. Whether it’s brownies, biscotti, or this vanilla – it just makes it more personal. We did this two years ago – and I know what you’re thinking, uh…Christmas is over! Yes, but I wanted to share this with you because now that I’ve used this vanilla, I don’t know if I can ever go back to the store bought stuff!

You’ll need:

  • Bottles or containers of some sort
  • Vanilla beans
  • Vodka
  • Bottle decorations to your heart’s desire

I found the idea for this recipe on Bethany Actually – great names think alike? I think so!

Anyway, you can use whatever size bottles you like. We mixed and matched 3 different bottles  that I bought at a craft store for about a dollar.

Cut each vanilla bean in half lengthwise and across – that should give you 4 pieces for each vanilla bean. Add 8 pieces (two whole vanilla beans) to each jar and fill almost to the top with the vodka using a funnel.

Add the cork or lid and store for at least 6 weeks! If you’re giving as a gift and didn’t make that far in advance – no worries! Just add a tag that says something like “Best used after March 1, 2012.”

When you’re ready to give as gifts, you can leave them plain or decorate to your heart’s content. I found a cute little picture online, added some text, and print them out on labels. I also found some cute holiday ribbon and used a little bit of hot glue to secure them.
